About the Photographer

Roger Coulam was born in Lincolnshire in 1965, but wound his way to the North East of England after an education in Yorkshire and then in Newcastle Upon Tyne where he studied as an Environmental Scientist.

Always at his happiest in the outdoors, he developed an interest in capturing some of the amazing landscapes he saw in the North West Highlands of Scotland on film, on his numerous visits there in the 1990’s, and the seeds of his photographic passion were sown. Soon after this he became interested in the extremes of nature, taking a trip to the USA to chase storms, a holiday that eventually led to him becoming part of a Storm Chasing Team in the States that every year track down tornadoes and some of the biggest storms on the planet.

Based in Sunderland, Roger turned professional in 2003, and developed his practice by supplying a wide range of clients with high quality pictures for editorial and stock use, through both commissioned work and his picture library.

He is widely known as the UK’s top severe weather stills photographer, with an often dramatic and moody style, which brings a unique character to the landscape and fine art work which takes up much of his time back home.

After establishing his style using medium format film cameras, Roger is increasingly eschews digital technology and both its disposable nature and its intervention between the artist and picture. As a response to this he has recently begun working with more “hands on” traditional silver printing techniques, and is exploring camera-less and alternative photographic methods, including lumen prints, photogram, cyanotype and argyrotype.

He is also a practicing printmaker producing photogravures using photo-polymer plates.
