About the Photographer

The most recent traveling show of my work was the 5 museum exhibition of my work in Jordan, 'The Bedouin Tribes of Petra photographs from 1986-2003'. This work may be seen at www.petraphotos.com I've given lectures which included images from this work at many locations including the Smithsonian, Library of Congress, National Press Club and the Jordanian Embassy. I published several articles related to this work and these articles were written and photographed by me.

My more recent on going project is 'Linkage, the interior spaces of religious buildings of the three Abrahamic religions' and it was for this project that the Fulbright fellowship was awarded. I spent 6 months in Egypt traveling around the country photographing churches, mosques and synagogues. This project evolved from the many images I have made in religious buildings while on assignments in various countries for a magazine for which I did much work, this magazine is now folded. So far Linkage, a work still in progress. has been seen at Georgetown University and at the Washington Theological Union. This work may be seen at www.ronayphoto.com

I began my photographic career as a staffer at the Washington Times. While there I freelanced as well. I have been on assignment for Vanity Fair, Vogue, Washingtonian and several other periodicals. In addition, since 1994 I have freelanced both for editorial companies as well as some of the biggest public relations firms in Washington including Qorvis, Powell Tate Weber Shandwick. I work for several embassies as well including the British embassy and the Kuwait embassy.

In order to keep current on poltical and cultural matters pertaining to the countries that I am most interested in I regularly attend lectures, panel discussions and other events at CCAS/Georgetown university, SAIS and various non-profits including Brookings and the Carnegie endowment that focus on Middle East politics and internal issues as well as events at a few embassies. Of course I am often reading articles and books on various aspects of cultural issues in these countries. I have worked in most countries on the Arabian peninsula excepting the majority of the Gulf countries.
