Philosophy of shooting
My entire philosophy of shooting is wrapped up into one simple concept: follow your heart. Photography is all about capturing life the way your heart sees it. When I’m shooting, I try to pay attention to my heart. I go after moments that appear to me and make me feel good. I strive to capture the inner beauty of people by focusing on the little things that attract me to them. Everyone has these qualities and they are easy to find if you look. Working with people gives me inspiration by delivering to them memories that they will cherish for a lifetime. When you shoot from your heart, your work will always be your own; something no one else can copy.
I have a few guidelines that I adhere to when shooting that helps me achieve my goals. I shoot with wide apertures for the shallow depth of field, which draws the viewer’s attention to the emotion of the subject. I prefer using natural light when possible because it preserves the natural dimension and contrast of the image.
My first lens choice is the telephoto because it allows me to be far enough away to avoid drawing attention to myself, but close enough to clearly capture the moment. Wide-angle lenses are great for shooting from the hip. I can grab unexpected moments all around me.
Backgrounds should complement the image being made. Therefore I try to use backgrounds with accenting tones and patterns that help to separate the subject from everything else. At a wedding I’ll try to include backgrounds that add excitement and emotion to the scene. An example would be to add the parents in the background during the first dace looking on with excitement and emotion. The right background can make or break a great photograph.
My ultimate goal is to create images that impart an emotion and become a cherished reminder that people will be proud to display. And if I’m lucky it will have a lasting positive effect on the people I photograph.
